Holywood Old School Project Trust was set up to save 'The Old School' built along Church Road, in 1845. At the time it was built, the Old School and the church opposite it, together with the former vicarage, were the only buildings on this part of Church Road and it was not until the end of the 1850s that development began to take place on the road above the church.
Building work to restore the school to its former glory has already begun and the costs have been met through funding from the people of Holywood in partnership with the following organisations.
• The Heritage Lottery Fund
• The Environment and Heritage Service
• Ulster Garden Villages
• The Garfield Weston Foundation
• The Architectural Heritage Fund
• EU Peace programme grant through the North Down Local Strategy Partnership
• Sponsorship has also been received from many local businesses
Ninety-five per cent of the money needed has been raised and, as the trustees believe that the remainder can be found over the coming year, they have decided that work should now begin. The trustees are delighted to have reached this point in the project and want to thank the funders and all the local people who have donated their time and money to make this happen.
