Holywood Foodies serve up a timely response

Despite glorious sunshine and the lure of the barbeque, organisers of the first public event by the new Holywood Transition Town group were pleasantly shocked by the turnout of over 50 Holywood residents who packed the library for a film screening and discussion on local food.

The inspirational film depicted Cuba’s response to food production and its need for self-sufficiency following drastic oil cuts. The film clearly touched a nerve and solicited a constructive discussion about Holywood’s own food supply chain in a world of rising oil prices.

Sacha Workman of Holywood Transition Town said,

“We were absolutely delighted with the turnout and the enthusiasm for growing local food. There is a groundswell of opinion that Holywood is overly reliant on imported food and that we are very vulnerable as oil becomes unaffordable or unavailable. With around 25 determined people signing up on the night to take part in future events and no lack of ideas, the opportunity to create greater food security in Holywood is encouraging.”

Holywood Transition Town is Northern Ireland’s first Transition Town group. It is part of a worldwide network of communities taking practical steps to prepare for a world of volatile fuel prices and an unstable climate. The next meeting of the HTT Food Group will take place on 11th June in Holywood Old School, Church Road at 7.30 pm. All welcome.
