Northern Ireland’s first Transition Town provides food for thought.

On Wednesday 14th May, Holywood Transition Town will hold its first public event with a film show and discussion on local food at 7.30 in Holywood Library.

The film will show the inspiring story of an island community’s response to food production when their oil supply was drastically cut. Afterwards there will be an opportunity to discuss where Holywood’s food might come from as fuel costs rise and climate change threatens crops.

Holywood Transition Town is Northern Ireland’s first Transition Town group. We are part of a worldwide movement of communities taking steps to prepare for a world of volatile fuel prices and an unstable climate.

A spokesperson for Holywood Transition Town said,

“In Northern Ireland we are all accustomed to a lifestyle and economy dependant on cheap energy. However, life with less energy is inevitable as countries chase a diminishing supply. We need to be prepared for this, to become more resilient and to start planning how we will meet our most basic needs like food, heating and transport close to home.”

The group believes that the solutions lie in tapping the experience, expertise and imagination of the local community. A series of future events in Holywood aims both to raise awareness of the challenges from a future with ever more insecure supplies of oil and to develop ways of living that can address these.
