Holywood Transition Town (HTT) is carrying out a survey to gauge the popular mood for an increase in apple trees and a community apple juicing facility in Holywood.
In a bid to make available more local food and cut Holywood’s carbon foot print, the HTT aim to plant traditional apple tree varieties on both public land (where people could access the fruit for free) and in private gardens in Holywood.
“We are also clear that there are many Holywood people who already have apple trees in their gardens which they are unsure how to maintain or whose apples they never manage to eat.”
Depending on the outcome of the survey, the group aim to set up a juicing facility potentially provide advice on apple tree maintenance.
“If we have an adequate supply of apples, relearn how to care for the trees and store the fruit plus have access to a local juicing facility we can drastically cut the need to import fruit and cause unnecessary pollution.”
Holywood Transition Town are talking to landowners, public and private alike. A large part of the assessment work is consultation with the community living around potential orchard sites.
The key aims of our project are
- To plant a mixture of fruit and nut trees around Holywood in public spaces and in private gardens starting with one public community orchard but eventually spreading throughout the town
- To establish a community juicing facility to produce local apple juice from the trees
- To establish annual apple day for the celebration of local orchards, juicing and information events (e.g. storing, grafting etc)
- To train & involve members of the community in establishment, care and maintenance of the trees as a vehicle for strengthening community cohesion
- To improve the biodiversity of Holywood, increase consumption of local fruit and juice etc. and in so doing reduce Holywood’s carbon foot print
