5 Millionth 'Travelling Bug' Incidence

Translink Celebrates the 5 Millionth Smartpass Passenger Journey!

Translink has discovered a mysterious 'travelling bug' among Northern Ireland's senior community. Symptoms include itchy feet and a strong sense of wanderlust, leading to record numbers of over-65s using their SmartPass travel card to obtain free access to public transport.

Now Translink, which has been monitoring the situation closely thanks to the latest smart-card technology, has indicated that the situation has reached epidemic proportions with the 5 millionth SmartPass journey just recorded - in less than 10 months!

However, far from being a cause for concern, Translink's Managing Director, Ted Hesketh, said that the high numbers of over-65s using their SmartPass was very positive news. Speaking today when the lucky 5 millionth passenger, Mrs Margaret Stephens received personal thanks together with a bunch of flowers from Regional Development Minister Angela Smith and Translink Chairman Joan Smyth, Mr Hesketh explained:

"I am delighted at the success of SmartPass so early in its short history. The fact that the province's over-65s have used their SmartPass to clock up an amazing 5 million public transport journeys since May last year is very significant as it demonstrates that Translink has achieved its objective of making the free travel entitlement as accessible and uncomplicated as possible.

"It also means that a great number of over-65s are taking advantage of the free travel initiative and, therefore, enjoying its many vital and far-reaching benefits, including greater social inclusion and reduced isolation. I am confident that we will continue to record such high volumes of SmartPass customers as this will mean that our senior community is enjoying a better quality of life.

SmartPass customer, Margaret Stephens, added: "Free travel is an excellent benefit. By carrying my SmartPass, I have the freedom to travel where and when I like without worrying about cost and, now, I don't leave home without it! I can't believe I'm the 5 millionth passenger - it shows I'm not the only one who is making good use of their pass.
