With summer approaching, we all want to be able to make the most of the outdoors and North Down certainly boasts many beautiful open spaces for everyone to enjoy. To help make sure the Borough looks its best during the holiday season, North Down Borough Council is running Spring Clean Week from Monday 26 May-Sunday 1 June and is asking all residents —young and old—to roll up their sleeves and join in the annual clean up.
Councillor Marion Smith first proposed holding a Spring Clean Week in the Borough in 2006 and is delighted to see it progress into its third year. She comments: “Everyone likes the environment around them to be clean, tidy and pleasant to live and work in. Spring Clean Week aims to encourage everyone to get active in their own areas, whether that be by picking up the phone to report a graffiti problem or picking up a bag and litter picker and doing some cleaning themselves. Around 500 people have been involved in each of our past two Spring Clean Weeks and their efforts have made a real difference to the Borough. I am sure we will have the same great response this year.”
A number of events have already been organised such as litter picks in Holywood, Ballyholme and Skipperstone Glen. Graffiti cleaning will take place across the Borough. A ‘dog day’ has been organised at Crawfordsburn Country Park on Saturday 31 May to promote responsible dog ownership and local school children will be able to attend interactive environmental workshops during the week. However, Council is hoping local people will have their own ideas of what needs done in their area and take the initiative themselves.

Councillor Anne Wilson, Chair of the Council’s Environment and Amenities Committee explains, “A core aim of the week is to encourage residents, businesses, church groups, community groups, youth groups, etc, to become actively involved in helping to clean up their local environment. All such efforts will be supported by Council and we will supply rubbish bags, gloves and litter pickers to make the clean up easier. To keep it fun we will also be making a few prizes available for the hardest workers in each clean up. We consider this a great opportunity for residents and businesses to really make an impact in their area and we hope many people will get involved.”
Spring Clean Week is a Council initiative working with Tidy Northern Ireland and Town Centre Management. If you are interested in getting involved please contact Glenn Thomas or Karen Kenny at the Town Hall on (028) 9127 0371. There are plenty of ways to help and Council staff will work with residents to make a difference in their particular area. So don’t delay and sign up for a bit of spring-cleaning today!
